The OD Ladies came second in their final home game of the season, losing to Hertford Ladies by 12 points.
The ODs showed great improvement from the away fixture against Hertford, and right from the kick-off made sure Hertford knew they were going to have to work hard for their points.
On a pitch more suited to hill walking than rugby both sides fought well at the ruck and maul situations and were evenly matched defensively. Scrum situations were also a hard battle as both teams had a tough and well-drilled pack.
Hertford broke the deadlock in the first quarter of the match from a chip over the top that split the OD defence. The second try came near the end of the first half when Hertford quickly retrieved a turnover ball. Following a few phases Hertford touched down the ball, although the OD defence seemed to get there first. This try was then converted.
In the second half the ODs put the Hertford defence under more pressure. Well worked back line moves complimented the physical forward drive - great runs from Amy Ruocco, Wendy Tatum (who was also fantastic under the high ball) and Catherine Dempsey (who was awarded Back of the Match) and some good driving play from Louise Landers and Sarah Rae - but the ODs never got close enough to the line to cause the Hertford defence any real alarm.
Towards the end of the match Hertford began to threaten the OD line again, but the OD defence stood solid. Forward of the Match Hannah Tyson, who played out of position for the match at flanker, put in some tremendous tackles. In addition, Ruth Dempsey saved a certain try with a tackle in the corner near the final whistle.
Great team effort with ODs showing just how far they have come as a team in both attack and defence.
