...to learn about changes for the coming season. New Chairman, Paul Murphy, opened by acknowledging the recent difficulties within the rugby club but heralded a fresh start and better times to come.
He introduced the new Seniors Head Coach, Phil Ubee, himself an OD and former captain who has a distinguished coaching CV with clubs such as Blackheath, Sidcup and Old Elthamians. Phil will be supported by former player Tony Smith who will look after the 2nd XV. Also Colin Sinclair is returning to the Old Dunstonian family as 1st XV manager. This key management and coaching team will be further strengthened by additional skills experts during the season to provide some specialist positional coaching. It all adds up to an exciting prospect for players who can expect to make real improvements during the season in return for commitment and hard work.

The new management team talked about their vision of success based on winning rugby, enjoyment and mutual respect. As former players, they all made reference to the club’s traditional values which they want to return to, as well as introducing a more progressive and inclusive culture both on and off the pitch.

Some details around team selection, fitness, and the plans for pre-season training were covered but the emphasis was all about moving the club forward in the right way to attract new players, new spectators and most importantly to develop a ‘one club’ approach that would motivate everyone involved. A players’ committee will be set up as part of the drive to build better communications and stronger relationships within the club.

Phil talked about his confidence in quickly establishing a positive training structure that would convert into winning results on a Saturday afternoon: “We are all aware that this has to be a whole club effort to get things moving again at Park Langley”, he said. “It was great to see and speak to this emerging and upbeat group of players who, I know, will buy into this revival. Hopefully an added value brand of rugby and the traditional OD club spirit and friendship will attract new friends and re-engage this club with the local rugby community”.

Formal training will start on Thursday 30th June at the club and continue throughout July and August, 19.30 start. Trial matches will be confirmed leading up to the new season’s league campaign.
