Having joined the Old Boys' Club in Langley Park on leaving the College Phil was immediately at home in the rugby club and played in the back row for the club for over three decades for various teams. He was a stalwart member of the First XV from 1969/70 until 1979/80 and, as he moved down the teams, he was regularly selected in the Firsts to fill gaps in the selection. He played 355 games for the First XV scoring 18 tries. He was a member of the team that won the US Chatham Sevens Competition in 1970 and during his season as First XV captain in 1976/77 led the team to the Kent Cup Final, beating both Sidcup and Westcombe Park on the way but losing in the final 9-3 to Blackheath. In that season the First XV won twenty three games more than any other team in the club's history at that time, scoring over 500 points 'for', and a great deal of the credit for this success would go to Phil for his leadership both on and off the field. In the 1978/79 season he was the team's 'Player of the Year'. By 1983/84 he had made it to the Vets XV where he would play the majority of his games until his retirement after the 2000/01 season, captaining the team in his last three seasons.
Off the field and despite his growing responsibilities in the business world he found time to be the club's fixture secretary from 1980 to 2000 and then president from 2002 to 2009. He was also the OD Association President in 1996/97 and Captain of the OD Golf Society in 1994 and 2004.
He was appointed to the Board of Governors of St Dunstan's College in 1993 serving on various sub committees, mainly to do with marketing, and was a long-term and active member of the Executive Committee until 2017. He was also an active Lords Taverner.
