St Dunstan's College has organized a trip for current students to commemorate the ending of the First World War.

Many Dunstonians, College Teaching Staff and Employees lost their lifes. The College would like as many Dunstonians as possible to attend to help remember the Fallen.

On Monday 18th February there is to be a re-dedication of the Memorial Plaque to all Dunstonians killed in the First and Second World Wars in St Georges Church Ypres and then attend the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate where permission has been granted for the College and Dunstonian Association to lay wreaths.

978 Dunstonians served in the military during the First World War; of those 228 lost their lives, this was amongst the highest casualty rates in Private schools in Britain at the time. Dunstonians saw service in many of the major theatres of the war, and at many of the most significant engagements.

A detailed Itinerary will be supplied prior to the trip, once completely finalized. There will be a guided tour of parts of the Ypres Salient Battles, including Passchendale. We will also be visiting a number of Commonwealth War Grave Cemeteries in particular Lijssenthoek Cemetery where Walter Ross is buried, Dozinghem where David Wilson is buried (both of whom had Houses named after them) and The Tyne Cot Memorial.
We will be attending the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate, which is a moving tribute to the fallen. Of specific interest for us, there are 13 Dunstonians named on the Menin Gate including John McCarogher the first Dunstonian to be killed in action.
Our tour will be guided by a Guild of Battlefield Guides qualified historian/Guide. Who will provide a bespoke tour focusing on engagements and places relevant to where Dunstonians fought and are buried. As well as giving a history of the battles in the context of the progress of the War.
