JOHN GRUNDY 15/04/33 - 30/01/23

It is with great sadness, respect and affection that we remember club stalwart John Grundy, who passed away recently aged 89.
A robust, formidable lock forward who surprised many with his effective goal-kicking, he represented the club for many years. His 127 1st XV appearances yielded 5 tries, 6 conversions and 11 penalties. As a natural leader he also captained the A and ExA XVs towards the end of his playing days.
John’s commitment on the field of play was matched by his dedication to his duties as a willing club servant, excelling in the role of Fixture Secretary for several seasons, before holding the office of President between 1974-77.
He was equally wholehearted in his support of the ODA, serving on the Trust committee for 10 years, 7 of which as Chairman, as well as making a distinguished Association President in 1997.
Whether it was the Rugby Club, Golf Society, or any of the numerous committees, trusts and boards he sat on, John brought the same energy, patience and sound judgement. Naturally, he was a dependably supportive presence on the touchline and convivial company in the bar.
He believed passionately in fair play, decency and camaraderie on the pitch, in the clubhouse, and in life generally. For John, rugby folk had high standards to maintain, responsibilities to fulfil and a duty to look out for others, as witnessed by his tireless efforts for the Wooden Spoon, alongside several other charities and community initiatives. In short, he made an endlessly positive contribution to the lives of so many.
“Old school” in the very best sense, John embodied the noblest of what the club, and the game, stands for. Virtues that must never go out of fashion: kindness, fellowship, respect and commitment. In the current climate, when rugby, and society, are faced with unprecedented challenges, we would all do well to treasure the values held dear by a classy, steadfast and devoted OD. May he rest in peace.
Funeral service to take place on Friday 3rd March, 12 noon at St Mary's Church, Ide Hill, TN14 6JE. Followed by a reception at Knole Park GC.
Family flowers only, however donations to "Wooden Spoon" Kent division or "Down Syndrome Association" can be sent to Stephen P Gay Funeral Service, 9 Western Road, Borough Green, TN15 8AL.
